Title
Hunkered Down for the Weather 1000 Islands NY
Artist
Robert P Hedden
Medium
Painting - Oil On Hardboard
Description
A shoal in the 1000 Islands Region of NY in the St Lawrence River acts as a gathering place for Cormorants to hunker down in the face of bad weather approaching. Not a favorite bird in the North Country because of their reputation as voracious fish eaters. An oiling the eggs in the nest program is carried out to limit population gwowth. The Chinese used to keep tmen like chickens and domesticated them to use as fihing aids. They tied a line aroung the Cormorants neck just tight enough to restrict them from swallowing the fish they caught. The birds would dive off the boat and return to the boat with a fish in their mouth.

Bob Great painting. Looks even better in your studio and in person! I wanted to look at it again and see if I could get a new set of colors for my next painting. I like the whites-greens and black with a little orange which is depicted on the left side!! SM

Christine, thanks for your comment. It is what an artist likes to hear about the viewers eye movement through a painting. As I mentioned before I am trying to do a series of paintings which depict the every changing atmosphere and essence of the 1000 Islands Region on the St Lawrence River. This painting was inpired by four separate photos I took. The first was one of the many dramatic skies as viewed from our house on the St Lawrence River (mostly a.m.). or while boating. The second was one of the disturbed water photos I ventured out to take in March 2012 when we experiencing 50 to 60 mile winds on the River. I stayed on shore of course and remember the wind was so strong that it prevented me from opening the car door. I had to turn the car around in tthe opposite direction and then be careful the wind did not tear off the door when I opened it. The third and fourth were of the Cormorants gathering on the shoal in the evening to settle in for the night was taken on a tour boat eco trip. Cormorants are not liked by the local fisherman because they have a voracious appetite for fish they catch by diving deep, There has been an oil on the nest eggs program by Department of Conservation to limit the population explosion. Removing the eggs just cause the birds to lay more but leaving them causes the birds to sit on the nest without the eggs hatching. The Chinese of past generations domesticated these birds and used them for fishing. They tied a section of rope (cord) around their neck just tight enough to keep them from swallowing the fish they brought back to the boat. Of course the birds were rewarded with adequate fish at the end of the trip.

Robert I really like the strong use of white in the dark sky! I have seen it really look like this. The following white path in the water creates interest to pull you into the painting. The fact that the path is off center made me look to the right seeing clearly the activity with the birds. The mood is telling! Really nice!!
